The Symmetry Project

For this piece, I began by thinking about how symmetry in the face is commonly accepted as beautiful. I thought of the supermodels one sees everyday on the covers of magazines and on TV. All of their faces are perfectly symmetrical, yet unique. I decided to transform this idea of beauty and make it geometric, unnatural, and robotic. I took away the patterns that make each of these perfectly shaped faces unique.

Then, I collaborated with a fellow student in class who had a symmetrical flower pattern that I thought would bring color to my drawing. That is when I decided to go digital with my project. At first, I planned on having the flowers cover the eyes completely, but then I felt like the robotic stare would be lost.

In this project, I tried my hand at basic animation and created a GIF to give the impression that the flowers are alive. The half flower pattern looks like a butterfly flapping its wings and the round flowers seem to flash back and forth between each eye.
